Our 2015 and 16 chevys did the same thing at under 100k. Smartest thing we did was replace the tranny and sell. Never look back. Nothing about those vehicles me or the misses miss. Just remember when you replace the tranny your putting the same one back in.

This. Do not put a GM rebuild in it or you’ll be back in the same spot in a few years. You can get updated builds from the aftermarket. The ones we install in those trucks have 100k warranty and a billet torque converter

The original design was to heat up quickly but it maintained that higher heat which toasts the tc which toasts the tranny. They have a new design which keeps it cooler. My original tranny fluid temp was regularly between 185 and 195, 195 to 198 underload. New valve has it steady 160 165.
I’m not an expert, just adding to the conversation here. Frustrating deal for anyone going thru it
Dealer warranty is 3year 100k.

Correct. We also eliminate the fluid thermostat to allow fluid to flow through the cooler at all times. They sell a kit to do it with many of the rebuilt transmissions that are available out there.
May 15, 2024 at 9:40 pm #2272721Dropped it off at the shop John recommended. They’ll run diagnostics tomorrow morning and then give me a call.
My 3 buddies that are up north had a slower day on Red today but still caught plenty of fish. Triple Dang!!! The winds have been favorable for that lake this week.
If I would have known this was transmission related, it would have been fixed and I’d be up there too!!May 16, 2024 at 7:53 am #2272737Dropped it off at the shop John recommended. They’ll run diagnostics tomorrow morning and then give me a call.
They will get you fixed up.
May 16, 2024 at 12:30 pm #2272785Needs new torque converter and tranny rebuild. My buddies are fishing Red again today. Quadruple Dang!!!!
May 16, 2024 at 2:57 pm #2272810And you can not hop in their boat? Nice friends LOL

If you don’t mind, could you share what the price on that job is going to be?

My buddies are fishing Red again today. Quadruple Dang!!!!Sorry about your bad luck but I was thinking the same. You couldn’t ride up with one of your buddies or have them tow your boat if you said you were having truck issues before the trip?

May 16, 2024 at 8:43 pm #2272885My 2016 is sitting at Virginia speed shop up in Virginia, MN awaiting a new, upgraded trans. TC went volcanic just after launching my boat last Thursday night in Tower. 138k miles. GM sucks, and I won’t have a truck for a month and a half.
I had addressed trans cooling and had the TCM tuned back when I bought it and hoped that would help the TC live a longer life, but lots of damage was done in the first 60k of it’s life and you can’t fix terrible engineering with band aids.
Unfortunately for me my opinion is a built trans is more cost effective than a new vehicle. In the distant future once this one is actually done for good, I won’t be buying another GM truck.
DeucesPosts: 5268May 16, 2024 at 9:09 pm #2272890Why such the long wait?
They got my rebuilt tranny at the dealer the next business day.

Most things are on backorder. We had to wait 3 months for my wife’s to get fixed.
DeucesPosts: 5268StanleyPosts: 1108May 17, 2024 at 7:47 am #2272929Parts can be an issue with no real reason. Common things are on back order or only 1 or 2 in the country and those dealers keep them for their local customers.

Didn’t positively know it was the tranny until yesterday morning. Some said drive it but the transmission shop said the torque converter could totally unlock at anytime. With going to Red Lake most days from my friend’s cabin by Talmoon, it would have been over 1000 miles for the week. I wasn’t going to chance it.
The 3 guys that have been fishing all week live in the Grand Rapids area. The friend who dove up Wednesday evening had a full truck and was pulling his boat.
Being retired I can fish anytime but it would have been nice to see my buds. Been going up there since 1978.May 17, 2024 at 8:34 am #2272942If you don’t mind, could you share what the price on that job is going to be?
Just under $6,700. Mine needed cooling lines (they were leaking) and the valve where they connect to the tranny.

8-speed tranny parts are hard to come by. Mine is a 6-speed and the parts are readily available.
Probably will be my last GM vehicle too. Been driving them since 1979. My 2004 had 180,000 when I got rid of it. No issues. The tranny guy said I got a “good” one. If I do get one, I’ll get rid of it sooner.CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377May 17, 2024 at 9:12 am #22729478-speed tranny parts are hard to come by. Mine is a 6-speed and the parts are readily available.
My wifes was a 6 speed, but that was a year ago. Glad things are catching up. When her engine blew that took 4 or 5 months.
27eyeguyPosts: 322May 17, 2024 at 12:04 pm #2272970Just had tranny replaced in my 17 Silverado with 117k. Was covered under lifetime warranty, thankfully. That was the 8 speed, only took a week. Would have been about $6400 at dealership. Got a quote for $4000 with the Billet Torque convertor from a different shop that I’ve used before.

Can tell you that tranny isnt on BO. I have 2 in stock and the big dealer 10 miles away shows 97 in stock.

This was a year ago not recent sounds like they caught up.
May 17, 2024 at 12:29 pm #2272977After owning GM, Jeep, and Ford, I moved to Toyota in 2006 and haven’t looked back. This guy almost had me convinced, though.

May 17, 2024 at 3:43 pm #2273001I had the same issue and the transmission oil change referred to by Yooper2 took care of the issue. No problems after that.
May 17, 2024 at 4:22 pm #2273003My 2nd Tundra is a 2020. I’m not sure if I’ll get another one, but it’s going to be a while before I need one. It should be plenty long enough for there to be a lot of turbos out there proving themselves.

Is yours an 8-speed? The TSB for the transmission fluid change is for the 8-speed.
May 17, 2024 at 7:47 pm #2273020Mine is 2015 Silverado 2500 HD Duramax with Allison 6 speed tranny.
