Just wondering on a few things about my kicker on boat, how long do yours take to shut off the low oil waring beeper? mine seems to take up to 30 seconds some times which seems really long. And any tips for keeping the carb cleaned on it if it site for 2weeks or more it doesn’t want to idle or run with out choke unless you take it off spray it out then runs fine.

Those kickers run ridiculously lean to meet EPA standards.

There’s an easy modification that makes a world of difference, I’ll try to find the video and post it. (Requires drilling out a brass cap over the idle/mixture screw and increasing the richness)

    Some other questions:

    Are you running non-oxy?

Ever replaced the fuel filter? (Make sure you’re running one that meets or exceeds OEM standards to keep fine particulates out of the carb)

Fuel hose in good shape and not deteriorating inside?

Have you ever pulled the jets and thoroughly cleaned the carb?

As for the low oil alarm, I can’t say I remember having the issue you are (and I’m assuming you’ve checked the oil lol)

I’m sure Sheldon will have some great insight too!

Couldn’t find a video, but just Google:

“Idle mixture screw mercury 9.9 brass cap” and you’ll find all sorts of information about it. Drill a small hole in the cap, barely thread a drywall screw into it, then pry it out and it will reveal the idle mixture screw.

I can’t remember if you turn it clockwise or counterclockwise, but it’s best to play with while the engine is running at idle, and see how it does under load too.

A Rubbermaid tote of water works well if you can’t get it into the lake/river, just make sure you’re always sucking in water so you don’t overheat.

You could try to do it on muffs, but you can’t put a load on it with the prop only turning air.

If you need to raise the tub to intake water, stack some blocking underneath until the skeg is close to the bottom (wood, bricks, etc, all work)

I did it to both Pro-Kickers I had on different boats and they ran/started sooooo much better.

I’ve had a Pro Kicker since 2010 or 2011 and I don’t remember ever hearing the low oil warning beeper or any beeper. If I heard a beeper, I honestly wouldn’t even know what is was without looking it up.
Mine has been a really good motor and I’ve never had to clean the carb although I did adjust the idle using the screw that B-man mentions at one time. I use leaded gas with 10% ethanol and always have and I’ve never ran it dry when done using. I do use fuel additive religiously though and add between every gasoline fill. I have changed the fuel filter in the past for preventive maintenance but I’e never had any fuel issues and honestly I’ve never even changed the plug since it was new. I’ve never had to. I troll alot and it runs like a top, idles nicely and always has. Changing motor oil and lower unit oil is the extent of what I have to do from season to season to get ready for the next year.
I’ll take it out of my shed this spring and it’ll start right off like it always does. It idles so nicely that I can’t even hear it running most of the time.

I’m not sure what the temperament of those merc kickers are but I know my Yamaha is really sensitive to oil level to the point that it gets irritated if it’s trimmed down past level. I usually add a little extra oil and that seems eliminate the problem.

Cant comment on the oil level – I had a 2005 9.9 and drilled out the brass plug to get to the mixture screw. Incredibly easy and made it a whole new motor . My new 9.9 Pro kicker fires right off . Cold blooded but just keep the choke on for a while.

I’ve had my eye on an EFI Pro Kicker for a few years now but my carbureted Pro Kicker never gives me any reason to get rid of it.
