I was able to spend a couple weeks Elk hunting in Colorado this year. We had an extremely good trip. We ended up 2 for 3 with all of us having shots on bulls. I wrote out the entire story but when I got to the 16th page (and I still wasn’t done), I realized knowone is going to read such a long post. So here is the nuts and bolts….

I shot my 5X5 the first day. He was with another bull, a cow, and a calf. I was able to sneak within 40 yards and put a good shot on him.

Jeremy had multiple close encounters. Including a 5X5 at 10 yards with no shot. And a miss on a huge 6X6 at 53 yards.

Kyle pinwheeled his 6X6 on day 9. He was pushing a cow and calf past us at 30 yards before taking a dirt nap.

The whole trip was unbelievable. We were in elk every day. I cannot wait to get back out there and do it again.

I would have read the 16 pager!
Congrats. Archery Elk is on a whole new level of hunting for me. It is the my hands down favorite by far.

What part of CO did you guys hunt? Was it a draw unit or a OTC unit?
    Did you guys camp?

I usually go around the Steamboat Springs area. OTC unit.

It sounds like you had a very good hunt and beat the odds with two out of three filling an archery elk tag and the third person with shot opportunities. An over the counter tag and DIY hunt is even more impressive!

We hunt Just north of Steamboat Springs. It’s all DIY OTC. We pack in and stay in a 4 man tent. We hunted out west together for the first time in 2013. One of my hunting partners had a baby last year so we skipped until we could all go. After this year, I’m not sure we will ever miss another year. I am very upset with myself for not doing this earlier in my life. I was 31 when I made my first trip. It should have been 21! After making two trips out west, I have learned a few things.

1.) You either love this style of hunting or you hate it. There is no middle ground.
2.) No matter how far you hike in, someone else has the same plan.
3.) Elk are where you find them. Which can change daily… if not sooner.
4.) You find out exactly how well you and your hunting partners can get along. In my case, I can’t ask for better guys.
5.) Round is a shape. But not the shape you want to be in. shock
6.) The definition of Camouflage: When you and your hunting partner’s body odor is so powerful, it becomes indistinguishable who actually stinks. doah
