2010 1700 Explorer Max HP rating?

I am looking at purchasing a 2010 1700 explorer tiller off of craigslist. The owner has a 90 HP Optimax on it…he was going to put a console in it but couldn’t. IS THIS MOTOR TOO BIG? Most ratings I can find are only for 75 HP. The boat is in great shape but I don’t want something “illegally” powered according to the regulations. Any help would be appreciated!

There should be a sticker/ tag in the boat stating the max horsepower allowed for that unit. Ask the guy selling it to take a picture of that tag and send to you. Or if it is over rated and you really want the boat just do what the other guys are doing. Peel the stickers off the motor that say 90 and replace them with ones that say 75. Not saying I recommend any of this but there are people doing it.

I had to go back to 2007 to find a 1700 Explorer tiller in the Lund catalogs.

    The max HP is 75.

I would get the Hull ID # and call Lund with it. They should be able to clarify any questions you have.

esux, they didn’t make a 1700 Explorer tiller in 2010. Please post a link to the ad, so we can see what he is trying to sell.

FYI the USCG can and will run the hull ID# of a boat to check horse power rating for the hull then will check the serial # on the motor and remove the cowl from the motor and check the block ID# to make sure everything matched up. I have had this checked a couple times over the last few years well being on USCG navigable waters. Different story once your boat exceeds the 20′ mark.

Here is the link to the craigslist ad. Talked to the guy who used to work in the boat industry….said he would put a 75 merc on instead as I expressed my concerns about the 90.

Thanks. I think there’s a play on words going on here, I do not believe that the HULL is a 2010, but the 90 Opti is. The hull has been repainted, new carpeting, makes me suspect that the hull is that new. Again, getting the hull ID # would determine when it was built.

I had a 1700 Explorer tiller with a 75 Opti on it, and loved it. the 90 would be sweet, but it would be over-powered, per the placard.

thats the same floor plan to my 2005 explorer, its only rated to 75.

Edit: Looking at the catalogs all the 1700 explorers from 2004-2007 has that same floor plan/layout so its has to be inbetween there.

Thanks guys! I talked to the guy again and he said the boat itself was a 2004. After talking to him I didn’t get a good vibe from him so I am steering clear. Looking at a 2012 1725 pro guide today here in Iowa….hoping to purchase if all looks as good in person as it did online.
