2007 E-Tec60 goes to idle in forward after running 2 or 3 minutes.

I have changed fuel pump, fuel filter, impeller engine oil, gear oil. Engine runs great for a few minutes and then just shuts down to idle speed and will not allow an increase in rpms. Any suggestions?

Imo you’re gonna need to get it hooked up to a computer and see if there’s any faults.

I’d go to the Etec Owners group….many very knowledgeable guys on that board.

But the first thing they’re going to ask is for the most recent ECM scan, serial, ect.

I would agree it sounds like it’s going into safe mode, likely due to an air bubble in the oil lines. You could try a few winterization processes to see if that knocks out the air bubble.

The only true way to know is to get the ETEC software, or have a dealer scan it. I personally would get the software just to have, it’s only $60 or so.

I had a G1 and it helped me many times.

Gentlemen: Thank you for the response, will try the ECM scan and look into the ETEC software.

Also, this is a tiller steer engine, has no monitor controls or instruments to read; will have an ECM scan, if possible.

I you take motor cover off I believe there’s led’s on the emm and if no faults should glow green? And if there’s a fault red blinking. But I do remember something along those lines.

As suggested there are LEDs under the cowl. Its a tiny panel of 4 or 5 lights on upper port side of engine. On a normal startup they will each flash once in sequence and then all will be off. If certain fault is captured light should show it.

I have a 2009 75 tiller. Recently had 3 year service done after which motor would go into safe mode after a minute or so at higher rpm. Would repeat this over and over. No faults on lights. Turned out some o ring related to impeller replacement was not correctly installed. Diagnostics showed a temp limit hit after 3000RPM which put it into safe mode. It still pee’d water but not enough enough circulation to keep temps in normal range. All good now on mine.

    Where are you located?

I have the G1 software that I will not need anymore.

On the E-TEC 40 going into safe mode; I changed the thermostat and all fuel lines. That solved the problem.
    Thanks for the responses.

So, did you ever had the motor scanned for faults? If so, did the dealer give you a copy? The fuel line seems a bit strange to me, but it will go into SAFE mode if there’s a temp fault, either the motor or the EMM.

Mechanic did not scan. I believe he figured it out.
    The fuel lines were old.

Well I hope you have it figured out. While an ETEC is a 2 Stroke, it is not your average 2 stroke. Your typical shadetree mechanic may have some difficulties servicing them without the EVDaig software.

But, moot point, as mentioned I hope you have it dialed back in.
