Looking at a used boat with the above motor and do not have any personal experience with the Evinrude E-Tec Motor. Looking for feedback positive or negative from the IDO Community regarding this vintage Evinrude E-Tec motors? Issues or concerns?

Thanks in advance for your input.

The early ones did have issues. I had a 2006 225 E-tec that needed the computer re-flashed. The only other thing I had was the prop shaft needed to be replaced but that was because my neighbor got about a 100 yards of braid line around the shaft and never told me. I sold that with 600+ hours. I just sold my 2009 200hp etec with 256 hours. That had a injector stick open, that I had to replace. If it would have stuck shut it would have burned up a cylinder but I got lucky with that. I would buy another. For me they were both good motors that were quiet and fast. You definitely hear horror stories about them. I think that the biggest thing is that you use good oil and non-ethanol fuel.

Bought my motor from a dealership that is a certified dealer of Yamaha and Evinrude. Mechanics their prefer Yamaha-big time. I work with a woman whose family uses an E-tech and they love it. I hope they continue to love it because all their boating is on Lake Superior. Good luck

Lower units, plug fouling and injectors were the most common problem. The powerheads don’t last long after an injector goes bad. If they stick open or shut it’s a problem. If it’s in good shape and still runs well I wouldn’t worry about it.
Stay away from ethanol and you should be fine.

Thanks everybody for your input. We are asking for a compression test and number of hours on the eTec motor.

If you buy it and install new plugs remember to index the plugs.

I am not a “gear head”, please explain what you mean by “index the plugs”? Thanks

Does the motor say etec on it? I believe 2004 is still the ficht motor. If this is a 200 ho direct inject “flag” motor be prepared for some mechanical surprises. The injectors fail and you won’t be able to find a new one or rebuild the used one, they don’t exist anymore.. call any Evinrude mechanic and ask them about the d.i. motors and they will give you an idea what your in for.
Also, see if the lower unit has been upgraded from the old lightning l.u. to the mag

Yes, the 200HP motor says E-Tec on the side.

When you look at the new spark plug draw a line on the ceramic with a sharpie where the open part of the electrode (opposite of the electrode) and when you tighten the plug make sure the line points toward the injector. If when you tighten it, and it won’t line up, try that plug on a different cylinder so that they all point towards the injectors.
