(Please help ) I put a new water pump in today. Put water ears on and started motor. Nothing was coming from pee hole for quit some time then it just dribbled. Chked pee hole for anything blocking nothing. Took thermostats out and tried ruining again nothing but dribble. Took foot off and ran a hose directly to water pump tube and what do ya know water comes thro like a champ, and engine was cool to touch. So put foot back on and same as usual nothing but dribble, and hot to touch.Thought maybe wasn’t like my 200hp Mercury and just doesn’t pee the same. But i took it to lake total submerged the foot thinking it wasn’t getting enough water high enough but at lake same thing dribble. What the heck is going on. Help

take it apart again and make sure the little wedge didnt slip out from under the impeller when you replaced it.
it is there to lock the impeller to the shaft.

Check to see if the tell tale is just plugged.

Also make sure the tube from the top of the water pump up to the block is set in the rubber grommet, and not slid out or bent the grommet over restricting water flow. This can be at the top as well. When you drop a lower unit, the tube can also slide out at the top rubber connection.

The tube or the wedge are the usually culprits. If not something is plugged or misaligned more than likely.

    Those mercs have tiny pissers

Family members Merc wasn’t peeing on a real cold fall day couple years back. Told em to get some hot water and pour it over, of course we have no running water and would take more time than I wanted to spend on the dock so I leaned way over the engine and gave it a quick slobbering, started peeing shortly after

Never will live down the day I gave his engine a bj, oh well, I caught all the walleyes that weekend moon

Had that same motor. You won’t see much of any water until it warmed up. Takes a while for the thermostat to open. That motor did that brand new until I sold it.

Take it out and run it hard. See if it starts peeing. If not. Remove the t-stat and drop in a pot of hot water to see if it opens.

Does it draw any better while in gear, or did you turn the shaft while you had it apart to see if the impeller is turning?

Strange long shot, but a couple years ago a Canada buddy changed the impellor in his Merc. portage motor and had the same problem. I took it apart, and he had the impellor ears bent the wrong way. Was creating a vacuum.

did you have the stainless steel bottom plate off when you replaced the impeller??
if so,is it possible you put it back on upside down?? if the bolt holes are equally spaced and you did that,it would block the incoming water from reaching the impeller.

was the old impeller intact?? or pieces missing?? if pieces were missing it very likely plugged the motors intake port where the tube plugs into it.

is the tube adapter in place? there should be a plastic one that has a rubber bushing in it that connects the water pump housing to the brass tube.
it should be on top of the pump housing unless its part of the upper pump housing but should still have a rubber bushing in it that seals the tube to the pump housing.

to help you out, look up your motor by serial number on marineengine.com
you will have to drop the 0 at the beginning of the serial number to find your motor.
once you find your motor, look at the diagram for the water pump assembly to see if you have all of the parts in place.

if I can be of further help,pm me.

    well i got it fixed
You wouldn’t believe what i had to do But my Nick name in the Military was Mc Giver
the only part that i did not change was the rubber tube that connects to the brass water tube
so i thought to myself that must not be tight enough anymore and the water must have been going out around the tube instead of up the tube so i bought some larger rubber hose that fit over the old rubber tube and the brass tube i sleeved with a rubber tube that was just big enough to go over it. slapped it back together and the thing is pissing like a horse.
Works great. I want to thank everyone that tried to help me with this problem.
