I’m looking to buy a 2002 40 horse four stroke Yamaha . I’m wondering if anyone has one on a 16.5 ft boat? Wondering if it’s unpowered or If it will work. Or any other info on this motor. Mainly do river fishing and smaller lakes up north. Thanks in advance.

That is most likely the max for that boat if it is a tiller. I have a 1754 war eagle and I have it maxed out at 50. Loaded with 3 people you would always like more, but with just myself and a fishing load I can hit 34-35

I have that exact same motor on a 1998 Lund 165 Alaskan tiller.

That Alaskan is a fairly heavy boat but will do approx 31 with just me and 28/29 with two guys. Even with three guys it planes it just fine. I never once thought I needed a bigger motor. I have fished all over with it including the Miss. river and Mille lacs. The boat is rated for a 50hp

Awesome motor and rock solid. Have a ton of hours on mine and zero issues. You’ll love that motor

One note though, you should drain the carbs over the winter or when you don’t run it more than a month or so. That motor has a reputation for dirty carbs if it sits too long. It likes to be run. Also, you might want to consider an external water fuel separator and run non oxy gas through it

    Hope this helps

I am not sure what boat you have, but knowing the rating, I think you will be disappointed. A 40hp is just above the max hp.

Would be good to just say what your boat is!

I know some 16’s the motor would be just fine on, I know others it would suck. Need more info.

I have this 16 ft. Lund with a 9.9 hp. Johnson because someone stole my motor.
    Talk about under powered. (Temporary)
But I fish mainly no-wake zones on the river.

I am sure the 40 hp. will work great on your boat.

I have a 40 Yamaha tiller motor on a Lund SSV 16′. Boat rated for 40 hp max. Love the motor. Will run 30mph with 2 guys and plenty of gear in the boat.

I ran a 2002 60hp Yamaha 4-stroke on my Lund 16.5 Predator. Wish I had bought the 75. Hull with a console (Renegade) was rated for 90hp.

Go the max your pocket will allow. Always better to have more then need more and not have it. My 1600 Rebel came with a 40 Merc brand new and thought it would be enough. With 2 people and our gear I wish I’d had the 50 max. My beam is 77″ and I’m thinking yours has a few on mine and that makes all the difference on what you need to push it on plane. On GPS I run 31 mph at 5800 rpms full out with just me and my gear and 30 mph with 2.
