My Brother & I have always updated/increased our ice fishing gear every season & the longer we fish it is clear that transportation across big water is what has held us back from doing all that we want on Erie thus far. So with a big trip in the plans for this Winter we have decided to address the option of buying an ATV or small Suzuki Jeep ect to hull our butts across the Lake – As expected we are on a limited budget (as little as possible) & a snow machine is not particle for Central Ohio – We are both nearly 6 feet tall & 250 Pounds without gear. Thanks & good fishing

Stripped out Geo 4×4. Add floatation to the from and rear. That is what a number of the resorts on LOW use for early ice while hauling people out. Reliable and easy to repair. I will try to find a picture from my archives.

    Welcome to IDO Gary!

For purely ice fishing it’s hard to beat an old Geo Tracker or Suzuki Samurai. But if you’re looking for something that you’ll get more use out of year around start looking for something along the lines of a used Honda Rancher. They’re inexpensive, lightweight, and very low maintenance. As long as you don’t plan to use it for deep snow or towing anything too heavy it’s the perfect transportation fishing/hunting.

I’d have to agree with Will. There are some great used ATV’s on the market, and if you search you may even be able to find a decent priced smaller UTV or Side x Side. You’ll find you can go places you just can’t go with Tracker or Samurai. It’s a little easier digging out a 550 lbs ATV than a 2,300 lbs Geo/Suzuki.
