They appear to be dropping early this year.
This guy was checking out my hay bales in an open shed.
When I came around the corner he took off and it actually fell off his head 20 feet from me.
That’s a 1st for me! Never seen 1 literally fall off while I was watching.
I saw at least 3 others yesterday that only had 1 side.
Seems really early from past experience.

Way cool!!! I have been seeing trail cam pics of one antlered deer the last 2 weeks. That’s pretty cool to see one actually fall off…plus it makes them a LOT easier to find peace

    It’s really easy.
Just get a pile of hay and wait for them to come to you!

    Just found a matched set…just a fork.
Must have been visiting the same hay pile, but I wasn’t there this time.
Found within feet of the 1st one in this thread.
They are shedding the horns like crazy now.

You inspired me to go for a good long hike today haleysgold. They are definitely starting to drop! I found one little broken dink, and the one below today.

    Nice find. Bigger next year!

    Funny story:
I have a plastic kids sled I use to haul the hay bales out. I throw it over the bales in an open shed. Saturday my sled was missing. I knew it was over the bales on the previous night so I thought WTH?
There’s a rope on it so the only thing I could think of was a buck was checking out the bales and got the rope in his antlers. Yep, found the sled the next day about 200 yards from the shed.

Man what a video that would made with that buck running like hell with a 5 foot plastic sled flopping all around him!

I was glad he got it off soon and didn’t drag it around until his rack fell off! His antlers must be pretty secure yet or I would have found them with the sled.

I don’t put the sled over the bales anymore either!

We just ran out at lunch to check some tree work and found 1 from last year here in NW Illinois. No nub heads yet on the trail cams. Have 140-150 class still running around as of Sunday night.

I walked close to half of our 240 acre farm on Saturday and found zero. Still have about a foot of snow in the woods and it has a hard crust on top that I was breaking thru. Made it very tough walking, so I will have to hold off shed hunting for a couple weeks.

Good news was I saw 24 deer and 3 grouse. peace

I feel your pain Sticker. I walked about 9 miles over the weekend and didn’t find another shed. I jumped 6 bucks with both sides still on their head. It was one heck of a group with 2 of them being very nice deer and the other 4 looked like they will be good deer on a couple years. Hopefully they stay in the area so I can go out and try and find those antlers in a couple weeks.

That seems so strange to me.
Every buck around my area has dropped them now.
Started around the 1st week in January and ended the 4th week.
And what was really weird, all the right sides dropped 1st then the lefts.
I only found 2 left sides and 7 rights.
Have not seen an antler still attached for a week now.
Here’s 3 of the bigger ones.
