I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the forcasted rain might be good for the ice in the long run. It should clear off some of the snow and slush and let it freeze back up better. But I could be wrong too.

IF that much rain does come, it won’t be good for anyone with wheelhouses or skid houses who have them out.

1″ is more rain than people realize. I have a feeling we won’t be receiving quite that much.

I follow weather pretty religiously, all models are locked in for 0.75-1.00 inch of rain ..our lakes in south central mn are a mess right now..it might be a good thing..but man 1 inch of rain and 40 mph winds could really deteriorate the slush and the ice its self…luckily we get back to single digit lows by Monday night…should be interesting. It feels like spring today.

1″ of rain = clean slate for ice making on any slushy lakes.

Remember in 2010 (dome collapse year), most of southern MN had similar but worse ice conditions through much of Dec but it got to 40+ with about 1″ rain on Dec 30. Knocked down all the slush and made great ice the rest of the year. I remember the date of the rain specifically because I spent all day removing huge ice dams from my house… smash

Yes, it will make a terrible mess for those with perms already on the ice but that’s part of the package if you have a perm.

It’s not good if you live on the Mississippi river and want to ice fish the back waters. The flow should be around 7-9K here now. Pushing 50- 60K. What the heck. The river here is up around 3+ feet from winter normal.

I’m assuming with the filling in of the back waters and the cement footprint in the big cities we should be expecting this to be the norm on the river?

One day, strait channel for commercial barge traffic and good to go.

1″ of rain equals 10″ of snow let it rain and get rid of the snow on the ice now.

Ice jams are a problem now.And I doubt if any of the lock and dams winter-set any gates so far. They will be busier than normal this winter having to move gates when needed.Sometimes higher river levels result in better fishing in backwaters, but makes the ice sketchy.

If this keeps up,maybe 1965 flood will be beaten?

Where are you guys at that they are predicting a inch of rain? Everything I looked at this morning was saying snow north of the metro.

Looks like my spear shack will be coming home with me tomorrow…Don’t want to deal with a bad shoreline on Monday trying to get it off…

This is for the TC metro. More rain south:

New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

    Sunday Night
Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 9pm, then rain between 9pm and midnight. Low around 24. Breezy, with an east southeast wind 20 to 25 mph becoming southwest after midnight. swung over to Roseville lake to get spear house off before work this morning. was pretty slippery went from slush couple days ago to a sheet of ice.

took all my banking off though so made it quick and easy to get the house off.
