I bought a rebuild kit for both my fuel pump and carb for this motor just to freshen it up and because the top carb gasket was leaking. I took the fuel pump apart and ended up dropping the diaphragm spring and the cap for it that goes against the diaphragm in the grass. I found the spring, but not the cap. Will it be ok with just the spring or not? I can’t even find the part number for the cap/cover online to order one, so I’m not sure what else I can do unless I just order another fuel pump.

the sum is the whole of its parts, you need the cap as it keeps the springs end from gouging the diaphragms base.
that and without the cap,the spring is too short and wont function correctly.
new pumps are not that expensive vs a kit anyway,ya,been in your shoes a time or two so a piece of advise.

put a king size white bed sheet underneath where you are working.
especially when working on a pratt and whitney R985 radial engine ten miles from nowhere in a grass pasture that is six inches deep and you drop the cylinder base nuts jam nut in that grass in an october sky just before dark.
dont ask me how I know, well, okay,I did exactly that a year ago, only took two hours to find it. smash

Thanks for the advice. I figured it would probably tear up the diaphragm, but hadn’t thought about it changing the working length of the spring. I just ordered another fuel pump. I knew better than to be working above grass, but went against my better judgement. I might listen to myself next time.

I was actually able to find a lot of then available to order, including a few aftermarket brands. I ordered one of the aftermarket pumps, so hopefully it is up to snuff. I’ll know this week sometime.
