Just bought a used rebel and took it out last night for first time. The only way I could get it to
    Plane was put
My wife in the bow. Did a lot of adjusting the trim but nothing worked. Anybody have this issue and have suggestions?
    Would a hydrofoil work.
    Has a 50 hp Merc.

    Don,
See if you can find any numbers stamped on the prop, I suspect what’s on there now has too much pitch.

For reference, my 1650 Rebel XL (tiller) with a 60 ran best with a 13″ prop, my slightly smaller/lighter 1650 Angler (tiller) with a 50 seems happy with a 12″ pitch 4-blade SpitFire.

    1625 Rebel XL Sport?

If so, it looks like they’re rated for a 90hp outboard. That’s going to be a pretty big ask to do much more than get up on plane with a 50hp motor. Weight is your biggest enemy. Pack light, try not filling the full 20 gallon fuel tank, you could play with a smaller prop to see what happens as well.

That’s kinda what I thought too. Seems like a severely undersized outboard for that size/type of boat. I’m trying to imagine a 40 hp outboard on my boat that is rated for a 75 and it would likely struggle mightily to get on plane. Maybe the lake the boat was used on had a hp restriction. If they put a 50 on there to save $ and it can handle a 90, that was a bonehead move.

I have pretty much the same boat with the same to small of motor. I know if my dad and brother in law would be with one could sit along side you and the other would have to be in front or it would struggle to get up. I would think just you and the wife shouldnt struggle.

Keep propping down to improve hole shot. You’ll continue to lose top end speed as you do that. Better to be on plane with a low top speed than to not be able to get on plane.

Let us know your prop size and the maximum rpm you can get now. Someone should be able to point you to the next prop based on that information

Wont be a sped demon either. Once up probably 35mph

What are your rpms when you are trying to get on plane? If they are low you could also try porting your prop which causes cavitation and increases rpm and hp to the prop and improves hole shot.

A 950# (empty) full windshield boat pushed by a 50hp outboard will not do 35mph or anywhere close to it.

I’d consider either repowering with a slightly used 75-90hp, or try to completely switch rigs if you regularly fish with someone else in the boat. I’m not a fly all over max out everything type person, but you’re over 40% under the max hp for that hull.

I don’t run wide open everywhere, but it’s nice to be able to fly when I want. You can probably get pretty decent coin for that motor, but repowering will cost you now.

It certainly sucks, but try working with a prop specialist first. If you can’t prop it to your desired performance some of these guys above are likely correct about being under-powered.

Lesson here is never buy a boat that you haven’t driven. I can’t understand why people would ever think that is a good idea. I sold my last boat and had to basically beg the person to take a couple hours off from work to take a test drive. He was set on just coming and getting it. That was almost 30,000 prebiden dollars. How many people would buy a car or truck without driving it? That was a dealers price point boat. They get people coming in with no idea what motors will work well on a hull but see the lower price and jump on it. The guy that sold you it knew exactly how it drove and that’s why he sold it. I bet he was ecstatic that you didn’t need to take it out.

The only difference between that boat and mine is mine is just a side console. With me and my old lady it will do 35mph on gauge and gps.

According to the lund redbook you need a 10.6 x 12 merc spitfire prop hope this helps
