15 HP Kicker too large?

I have a 2009 Mercury 15 HP 4 stroke with a tiller, that we took off the A/C when we sold the boat and trailer only. It is 92 pounds dry and I was thinking of putting on our 2001 1700 Pro Sport. Should I use a transom mounting plate? I was going to put it on the left, but that means that my passenger and the kicker would be on the same side. Is that a balance problem? Is using a tiller motor as a kicker difficult in a boat this size?

Have to find what works best majority of time. Possible to fill up a livewell on one side or the other to offset?

Also is handle convenience. The passenger side my handle would hit the transom, not a deal breaker but maybe see what works for you. Also it’s more outside the boat than when it’s on driver side.

Moving batteries around, equipment, etc can also help a bit. Sometimes best way is just throwing it on and trying different things.

    Good luck.

You don’t need to steer with the kicker if you have a bow mount trolling motor. I just use the kicker for propulsion. The bow mount makes much quicker turns as well. If the 15hp won’t go slow enough you may need to change the prop to a lesser pitch.

You should be fine. My 9.9 pro kicker weighs over 100 lbs and fish with 300+pounders often. Haven’t noticed any issues besides the fact that I have fat friends.

This topic is of great interest to me. I have a Lund Tyee Magnum 1750, and was told our kicker, a Mercury 9.9 that weighs in at about 85 pounds, is too heavy. It feels pretty heavy, and I tend to agree. It came with a Trollmaster throttle control, which is a plus, and we’d want a new one if we replace the kicker.
I’m thinking seriously of trading it in, for something lighter, that is compatible with a Trollmaster. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Also, any Green Bay outboard motor stores you might be able to recommend would be fantastic. Thanks so much! Prof
