12v deep cycle charger question

I want to charge up a deep cycle battery to power my sonar in the house for a bit. The only charger I have access to at the moment is a Die Hard unit. It has a specific setting for deep cycle so I’m not worried about damaging the battery or anything. The manual for this charger says to hook up 24″ of 6 gauge cable to the negative terminal, and then connect the negative clamp from the charger to the end of that 6 gauge cable instead of directly to the battery. I’m attaching the page from the manual for clarity.

My question is — is this really necessary, or can I just connect the positive and negative clamps from the charger directly to the battery terminals? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Not necessary. Probably written by a CYA legal team. Hook to the battery and then plug in the charger. You be fine.

If you make the battery connections prior to powering the charger I think you could go without the (-) extension.

Thanks fellas. I just didn’t want to mess up the battery.

Yes, I always clamp to the terminal and then supply power to the charging unit.
