I work with two guys that had bought the strikemaster Honda with 10 inch bits last year they seem to work fine down in North Dakota they said that they would hang up at the bottom of the holes though then we took one to winnipeg with two extentions on it last year and it struggled to get through have they changed anything with them this year? I like the way the run and the fact that there so lite but if I’m gonna struggle on lake winnipeg with it I’m gonna have a hard time buying one I have a 3 hp ten inch strike master now and works good but it is heavy

You have to tighten the screws on the blades. Mines did that before, works fine now. the instructions clearly states that you do that before using it if that hasn’t already been done. I’ve drilled through 24″ of ice with no issues haven’t done anything more though

Every company is working for light weight and the prices keep going up, but as far as performance that old Jiffy is still as good or better than anything out there, just heavy. Performance hasn’t improved as much as marketing and gimmickry.

It’s hard to say for sure but my guess is that the ice is much thicker up on Winnipeg and what is happening is that there are so many ice chips that they are causing the auger to bog down a bit resulting in less power at the bottom of the hole. The Honda lite is an awesome auger but it does not have nearly the torque of the 3 HP Solo engines and I’ve seen it before when cutting through 30″+ of ice and as soon as water starts to fill the hole and the chips become slush it can lock up even a high torque 3 HP auger. When cutting ice more than 18-20″ inches it’s always best to “clear” the ice chips from the hole pulling pulling the the auger out before you break through the last few inches no matter what you auger you’re using waytogo

I personally run a Honda for everyday use because I love how light it is, but I did keep my SM 3 HP Solo for once I need an extension. Sure the Honda engine will do it, but 30″+ of ice with a 10′ hole is really going to to be pushing the Honda. Kinda like towing a 4000# fiberglass boat with a 1/2 ton truck, yes it will do it but no where near as well as a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel would. Make sense?

Try pulling the auger up and out of the hole when you are about 1 foot from breaking through to evacuate all of the chips traveling up the auger. Just a thought…

Me? I like my 40 year old Jiffy. -)
