Chippewa Flowage Fishing Report for May 21

Walleye fishing has been great lately on both the chippewa Flowage and area lakes. Water temps on all bodies of water are on the rise and are around the mid 60’s now. Walleye can be consistantly found in weeds, on every lake in the area including the Chippewa flowage. The best technique lately has been Jigs and Minnows. jig through the weeds, very slowly, when you get a bite, give the fish time to eat it, lately it has been about 10 seconds. Wheather they take line or not, you will see your line jumping, that is the fish eating it, and then set the hook. Don’t lift your rod to try to feel the fish again. Very tough bites, but you will know.

Seems like on the East side of the flowage, in the coontail and milfoil. the best walleye fishing has been where the weeds are solid and then are a bit sparce. Cast to the thick weeds and bring your jig through the sparce weeds. on the other lakes most of the fish are coming in the middle of the weed beds, not so much on the edges. slip bobbers haven’t been as productive. With the warmer water temps leeches should be working great now too. Alot of guys are getting fish in deeper water.

Crappies and bass are in the shallows getting ready to spawn. My buddy and I went out yesterday to get some, and the crappies on the Flowage were endless really. neither of us felt like cleaning them, so we released them all. For the bass and crappies look for shallow bays with newly emerging lilly pads, and with timber will hold the crappies and bass.

My buddies and I went to a smaller clear water lake walleye fishing, and we caught about 34 or 35 walleye all between 14-17 inches all on jig and minnows in cabbage in 5-8 feet of water. Alot of fish on the Flowage have been about 17-22 inches fishing in the weeds. also carp are up spawning on the flowage, talked to a guy that shot two yesterday one was pretty big.
