Anyone out there using their gas augers for doing work in the yard or garden?

I was thinking of just taking off the blades on my old gas auger to dig holes for posts and planting trees.

    Think that will work?

Done it many times. Works like a charm if you have a old auger bit and not a ton of rock

Remember my dad and his friend doing that. Be careful, the speed of them could hurt you if it catches something.

I first started out with an old auger I took the blades off of and it worked great. Strikemaster used to sell a actually dirt auger (have one at work).
My one warning…. if it doesn’t have reverse, go SLOW. We wrapped on around a root so bad we had to dig down 3 feet to get it off said root. What a PIA that was!

you can also buy an earth auger for $60 at Menards to put on. might save you some time as they are made for dirt and smaller rock. They also have a longer starter bit so it’s easier to get them going.

Dont the ones made for dirt also have a spring on them so when you catch a rock or root you dont tear your arms off.

You can find a free or almost free gas auger all over.

what do you have to lose, other than your right arm when it catches?

Jiffy is or at least was owned by Feldman Enterprises. Feldman stated out making power augers for soil.

If ice auger catches on rock or root a trip to ER will cost a heck of lot more

Use the right tool for the right job if you value your arms, hands, fingers, etc.

I’m not sure if the gentleman is still around or not but I believe he used to frequent fishing mn and was from the Roger’s area that made clutches for the jiffy to use in dirt. We had an old jiffy 88 that we used in dirt all the time it still bit pretty good but would not whip you around

If your not drilling 100 holes you will be just fine. No need to run out and buy anything else. Brace your hip to the auger and you will be just fine. I’ve done it 100s of times. Can it catch, well yeah but brace your hip in to it and you will be golden
