Homemade Auger Mount for My Snowmobile.

After a lot of research on different designs of mounting options for my Solo on the back of my snowmobile, I decided to make my own. It’s made out of 1″ Square steel Tube, the mounting points for the powerhead are a piece of 2″ pipe sawed in half, and the auger mounting point is a piece of ange iron.

The cost for the entire project was about $15 for the 1″Tubing and Spray Paint. We already had a piece of scrap 2″ pipe and scrap angle iron. It took us about 2 hours and a few Grain Belts to weld it up, well more than a few GBs!!

We welded 2 pieces of 3/4″ Square tube to the rear Bumper of the snowmobile, it’s a 1975 Pantera so a little weld won’t hurt any thing, for the 1″ tube to slip over and bolt to!

We thought about clamping the 3/4″ but decide a weld was more secure. I added foam pipe insulation to each mounting point for some cushin and strapped it down with 2 bungee cords, solid as a rock!

Looks pretty good. Considering that snowmobile and ATV manufacturers are loath to suggest mounting Augers to any part of your machine, homemade is about the only way you can travel with your auger.

I’m still thinking about putting a push/pull clamp with a J hook on to hold the auger, something like This mount uses. Just not sure how much pressure I want on the composite handles of the Solo.

Great job the one thing I would do is make one end of the bungee permanent to the mount, lost way to many from my 4 wheeler.

Good Job. I also made one this year. In fact it was 2 one for the wheeler and one for the snow machine.

Great minds think a like, I’m going to drill a hole in one side of the square tube so one end of the Bungee can slip through the hole and get crimped over so it cannot be taken off. Then I only have to worry about taking one side loose.

We originally put holes in the mounting points but that turned out to not work the way we had hoped.

    Looks identical to mine.

From experience, the welds broke on the main support legs that “T” to the horizontal auger support beam. I had the whole system reinforced and see how it works for year #2. It would be a shame to see the auger mount break, and auger fall to the ground.

Chuck were you utilizing the Grain Belt correctly……. may of been the reason for failure.

Lots of rough miles on the back of a snowmobile caused failure.

Last year pic with the sled, and this year with the ATV with no snow (w/ modifications).

    Chuck,

Looks like your’s sits up much higher than mine and that would put additional stress on the welds. Mine also slips about 8″ over a 3/4″ OD Square Tube. I will keep an eye on it for cracks but the reinforcement might be a good idea!!!

    Did you use 1″ tube?

The height if fully adjustable from high (like the sled pic to fit a 5 gallon bucket underneath), and I can lower it way down.

If I recall correctly, mine is 3/4″ tube with 1″ tube mounting brackets it slips into.

How did you make it adjustable, does the 3/4 slide all the way through the 1″ and have multiple holes to adjust height? Mine cannot go through because it is 1″ over the top of 3/4″

Correct, in the sled pic you should see the silver pin fastening the auger mount posts to the 1″ base to make the adjustments.

Much more pleasure doing it yourself, plus I saved about $70. Only cost $15 for metal and a can of paint. I can buy a few cases of Grain Belt with $70!!!
